Mat Teacher Training Program
The mat work course is a stepping stone to the full comprehensive course. It is advised for students who do not have the time or resources to study the comprehensive course, or for those in locations without adequate Pilates equipment.
Equip for a new career
The mat course is very affordable and introduces people to the foundations of Pilates. Students study the full complement of Mat Work exercises (basic to advanced) and the integration of small apparatus into the program. BASI encourages students to use this program as a springboard to the (Comprehensive Teacher Training Program).
Please note that this mat course is included for free within the comprehensive course, so if you start with this standalone mat you will repeat the mat within the comprehensive later for free, which is a great review. Alternatively you could start directly with the comprehensive. If you do mat first, and later come back for comprehensive, you will get a 10% discount on the comprehensive.
6 Modules
Mat Course Syllabus
The course structure is modular. A student can make up or repeat each of the 6 modules (4-5 hours each) at any BASI Pilates host location around the world. Each module consists of practical and theoretical components.
Module 1 - The Fundamentals
The principles, the pelvis, breathing, exercise description, historical overview, safety.
Module 2 - Anatomy Overview Part 1
Anatomy overview & terminology, joints, centre of gravity, cueing & imagery.
Module 3 - Anatomy Overview Part 2
Primary concepts covered include the BASI system of movement analysis, exercise physiology, and aerobic/anaerobic exercise. The BASI format of teaching is discussed and the BASI Pilates® Block System, created by Rael Isacowitz, is introduced.
Module 4 - Posture Assessment
The primary concepts covered are the principles of alignment and posture assessment. Discussion includes exercise as a tool for assessment.
Module 5 - Core Strength Back & Abdominals
Core strength, effective exercise, contraindications for the spine, guidelines for successful teaching, being a teacher.
Module 6 - Exercise Adaptation
Exercise adaptation, exercise progression, modifications to exercises, using small equipment, constructing a complete and comprehensive program.
In addition to the academic study, students must complete the following hours of study: observation (15 hours, of which 50% can be done using BASI Interactive ), self-practice (40 hours, of which 50% can be done using BASI Interactive ) and student teaching (30 hours). Your observation and personal practice are best done in a BASI class, for your learning sake (your UK/Ireland host will allow you time for observation and you can book in with them for classes). If you have no access to BASI classes and don’t live near your host studio, then you can log hours in a non-BASI environment and then refer to BASI Interactive to check on what might be different and why. Your teaching can be done at home or anywhere you can find friends or family willing to have you teach them.
At Module 4
Written Quiz (30 minutes)
After Module 6
Final Written paper
- Demonstrate 4 exercises
- Teach a 30 min class
All mat courses will still be at £1500 in total (excluding exams)
- Course Cost (includes non refundable registration fee of £35)
